For at home remedies:
In most cases water based stains such as most drink spills and some food, even animal urine can be spotted at home using a mixture of 50/50 water and white distilled vinegar.
With oil based stains such as grease, oil, ink a solvent spotter is recommended. K2R can be purchased at most hardware stores or using a small amount of Isopropyl alcohol can do the trick as well.
Always apply the vinegar solution and solvent solutions to a clean, preferably white, rag first and blot the stain. Do not apply solutions directly to the rug itself. Do not scrub or agitate side to side this can spread the stain and damage the texture of the pile.
It is always recommended to stay away from over the counter products such as Woolite, Resolve, Spot Shot, and others when spotting your area rug. These products can and will damage natural fibers such as cotton, jute, or wool and many times the damage cannot be corrected.
